Big Mac Day in Uruguay!

Posted by The Southron on November 16th, 2007

Every year since 1992 the people of Montevideo have lined up to buy as many Big Macs as they can from celebrities and public officials working the counters at Ronald McDonald’s place. The reason is that all of the profits from the sale of Big Macs today are donated to Fundación Peluffo Giguens to support [...]

THANKSGIVING DAY: Gringo-Uruguayo Fusion–Turkeys Stuffed with Asado!

Posted by The Southron on November 5th, 2007

On Thursday 22 November at our usual Thursday Open House we will be celebrating Thanksgiving Day. (This is my favorite Yankee holiday because it includes lots of food!) In keeping with our tradition if integrating Gringo and Uruguayo customs, we will be having BOTH traditional Uruguayan ASADO and traditional American TURKEY and stuffing. The turkeys [...]

Maybe Al Gore was right? ¿Tal vez Al Gore tiene razón?

Posted by The Southron on October 21st, 2007

Last weekend several of the UruguayLiving gang, The Southron included, trekked to Piriápolis for the social event of the Spring: Ken’s “Open House”. Ken had asked us to bring some ice along; which seemed innocuous enough, until we had made six stops on the eastern side of Cerro San Antonio (St. Anthony’s Hill) without finding [...]

The Labor(less) Day Weekend—Part Two: the Hot Springs…

Posted by The Southron on September 18th, 2007

After a very quick trip from Montevideo, we crossed the Rio Dayman in the Departmento of Salto and were immediately in the vicinity of the Termas de Dayman (Dayman Hot Springs). A few hundred meters from the river was the rental agent from whom we had arranged our accommodations. We had 4 cabañas and a [...]

Nostalgia Night–or a Night to Forget QUICKLY

Posted by The Southron on August 28th, 2007

Last Friday the UruguayLiving staff and dates went to a Nostalgia Night (La Noche de Nostaligia) at a party center at about Kilometer 13 on Ruta 5–it was hosted by one of the major hotels and cost US$50 per person. Considering the price, the provider and the location, everything should have been first class… WRONG!

Do they have the 18th of July in the United States?

Posted by The Southron on July 18th, 2007

I posed that question to a cultural attaché in the Yankee Embassy this week.  Her response was, “No, we have the Fourth of July instead”.  At that point I could not resist asking her, “What day do you have between the 17th and the 19th?” Today is Constitution Day  which is a major national holiday [...]

10 years after my Independence Day.

Posted by The Southron on July 4th, 2007

Today marks the 10th Fourth of July since I moved outside the United States. Over the years I have been questioned about that move and about my continued foreign residence. It all started for business purposes. But over the years, I became more distant from the US—each time I returned it felt more and more [...]

Cinco de Mayo Party

Posted by The Southron on April 23rd, 2007

In what some will undoubtedly see as yet another nefarious attempt to Anglicize Uruguayan society, to UruguayLiving.com gang will be sponsoring a “Cinco de Mayo” party on Saturday, May 5, starting at 6 p.m., at our offices in Buceo. Appropriate Mexican food and drinks will be served.  Please feel free to bring along any of [...]

Have I missed anything? A party? Guests? Anything at all?

Posted by The Southron on March 24th, 2007

If one is going to be sick I highly recommend having a fever. A fever keeps you warm, it gently blends reality and hallucinations into a fabric that can keep you amused for hours; best of all, it’s is a wormhole in time that transports you from “before” to “after” without having to bother with [...]
