The best lifestyle in the world for the price…
This is the journal of The Southron, an American Emigrant from Florida who has spent the last decade living in the West Indies, former Yugoslavia and Costa Rica. He moved to Montevideo, Uruguay at the end of February 2006...

Oops! The clock fell backwards and I missed it…

Posted by southron on November 6th, 2007

This past Sunday the Yankees (and occupied Confederacy too) turned their clocks backwards as they went from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time.
This is the last time change relative to Uruguay for about 6 months—so for those of you who are timechangeophiles, you need to find a new hobby for a while.

In the meantime, this […]

Yet another time change (but only relative to Europe)…

Posted by southron on October 28th, 2007

If you live East of the Atlantic Ocean, and If you just changed your clock from Summer Time to Standard time; Then you are one hour closer to Uruguay than you were yesterday.
As of today:

London is now 2 hours later than Uruguay, not 3.
Most of continental Europe is now 3 hours later than Uruguay, not […]

A Sweet Sixteen (actually fifteen) blowout…

Posted by southron on October 27th, 2007

Last weekend, the Southron was privileged to be the only extranjero invited to a Uruguayan rite of passage for young ladies: Quince Años, the 15 year old’s birthday party.
This party is a combination of a US middle class “Sweet Sixteen” party, an upper class “Coming Out” debutante ball, and a solemn affair of State. […]

If it’s not VIRGIN olive oil, was it pressed in a bordello?

Posted by southron on October 2nd, 2007

Every time I think I know something in Spanish, they throw me a curve ball! Like most of the rest of the world, Uruguay is not particularly “big” on salad dressing—though it does exist and is slowly catching on at about the same rate as conversions to Tree Worship.
Friday I ordered a enslada mixta, […]

Two o’clock and all’s well…

Posted by southron on October 2nd, 2007

…unless you are trying to figure out what time it is in Uruguay starting this Sunday at 2AM local time.
On the first Sunday in October, at 2AM, Uruguay springs forward to 3AM as Summer Time begins. Since most other places do not change on this day, it brings on a season of confusion, missed appointments […]

What we got here is a failure to communicate…

Posted by southron on September 20th, 2007

That was probably the only decent line in the movie “Cool Hand Luke”, and it epitomizes the way I sometimes feel when speaking English around the world.
For example, when I lived in the West Indies, someone would say to me, “I’m going to pass by your house tonight”. My usual response was, “that’s […]

Something I never saw at my parents dinner table…

Posted by southron on September 17th, 2007

Today at lunch I saw something that starkly demonstrates one big difference  between the US and the rest of the world.  The salad dressing bottle was almost empty, and it was very hard to drain the dregs from it.
My solution would have been to turn the bottle upside down and wait, so that more of […]

Spanglish and Ingspañol…

Posted by southron on June 25th, 2007

After more than 16 months living in Uruguay I’ve come to the conclusion that there are least four languages in which I regularly more or less communicate. These are: English, Spanish, Spanglish and Ingspañol. (There is also a fair amount of profanity which may well have reached sufficient proportions to be considered a […]

Not so super Supergas…

Posted by southron on June 24th, 2007

It is 7°C outside now (for those of you in Yankee land, that is about 44° F). The winds are brisk and steady at about 40 kph (25 mph) and the sun is bright. As I look outside my window where the local football team (soccer to Yankees) practices, I see a clump […]

It could be worse! I could have snow up to my waist, or icicles the size of stalactites hanging from the roof, or roads made slick from icy rain or, you know the drill…
On the other hand, I could be hiding in the West Indies waiting for the latest killer hurricane to try to […]
