The journal of an Emigrant from Florida who spent almost 5 years in Uruguay...

…unless you are trying to figure out what time it is in Uruguay starting this Sunday at 2AM local time.

On the first Sunday in October, at 2AM, Uruguay springs forward to 3AM as Summer Time begins. Since most other places do not change on this day, it brings on a season of confusion, missed appointments and general annoyance.

Just across the Rio de la Plata, Argentina does NOT observe Summer time–so the time there will be 1 hour earlier than in Uruguay, even for those parts of Argentina that lie East of Uruguay (I can never figure out the Argies, even France observes Summer Time.)

If you are in the US in the:

  • Eastern Time Zone, Uruguay will be 2 hours later than you.
  • Central Time Zone, Uruguay will be 3 hours later than you.
  • Mountain Time Zone, Uruguay will be 4 hours later than you.
  • except for the nonconformists in Arizona, where it will be the same as for Pacific time.
  • Pacific Time Zone, Uruguay will be 5 hours later than you.
  • Alaska-Hawaii Time Zone, Uruguay will be….uh, how the heck do I know.

If you are in Europe in the:

  • UK Time Zone, Uruguay will be 3 hours earlier than you.
  • Central European Time Zone, Uruguay will be 4 hours earlier than you.
  • Eastern European Time Zone, Uruguay will be 5 hours earlier than you.

THEN THERE IS THE BAD NEWS.

When the US goes off Daylight time and Europe goes off Summer time, the relative time differences will change for you again. Who says living here is boring?

Something to say?
