While digging through the mound of e-mail that has collected in my inbox I found what might be a real gem:Â www.coastaluruguay.com.
The gentleman who sponsors that website, Steve Bowman, was kind enough to write me and tell me about. I took a look at it and realized that it has some useful information in an area where our own it information is pretty light, the eastern coastal region of Uruguay.Â
While I am confident of the quality of the work we’ve done regarding Montevideo, we have certainly given Colonia in the West and all the beach communities in the East less than their due. I plan to correct that in the second edition of “The Southron’s Guide to Living in Uruguay”, but in the meantime this information needs to be available.
I commend Steve Bowman for his great work and I commend his website, www.coastaluruguay.com to all of you.

David-
Thank you for the good words. And thank you for the long conversation just now!
By the way, if you get a chance to look at the current post on Coastal Uruguay, there’s a woman asking some pretty tough questions about special conditions health insurance. She would be well served to know about your orginization. I’ll mention Southron and perhaps you could do a brief heads-up post to her.
Thanks again,
Steve

Hi David- The name Martin seems familiar. Isn’t he a real Estate agent for International living. I think I remember getting a response from him .

The reason I asked about Martin Larrobla as writer for Coastal Uruguay is that I asked a question of IL and he responded concerning real estate . Always suspicious of anything from IL real estate co.

About Martin Larrobla.
Martin is not with International Living. We agree with you in that they do not, how shall I say…do the most straight up coverage of real estate (or anything else for that matter.) The company Martin works for does show groups around that IL sends on tours.
I don’t feel this makes Martin or Coastal Uruguay supporters of IL.
I’ve done business with Martin, he’s OK. I’ve read IL’s stuff; enough said.

The advertisement for the apartments for rent fails to say anything about common expenses. And US$300-350 a week in off season seems high to me.
I’m sceptical about the comparison of Uruguayan medical services with U.S. services.

Hi David-I am curious to know how how many Americans and Europeans have moved to Uruguay in the past 3 years to the best of your knowledge?
>>I really don’t know–this would be a good question to post on the forum.

David-
After the complex medical insurance questions/issues that were posted in the last few days, we are putting a link to http://www.sociedadsouthron.net/ on Coastal Uruguay.
There is a clear need for what Southron is doing! We’ll send everyone we can to you…..you’re on the right track.

Hi folks my name is Martin de Larrobla and since apparently there is some sort of missinformation I would give it to you right from the horses mouth. I am a Uruguayan born, U.S. acquired citizenship person that has lived in Punta del Este for the last 14 years. I have for the last two years worked for an Argentina based real estate office here in Punta del Este. We work almost exclusively with Americans and I do as part of my duties answer most if not all the mail that comes in. If you happen to write and you came from IL, Escapeartist, thru a friend or whatever the referral source, then it was me who answered to you. Yes, I make my living in the realestate field and I think a lot of people will also tell you that they were honestly and diligently served by me. If I wrote to you thru IL is because you requested information thru that channel and I should not be blamed for doing my job nor it means that I am part of IL since I am not.
>>I have received private information from a couple of our memebsr who have bought real estate through Martin and highly recommend him as honorable and reputable businessman. As must as I dislike IL, they have often recommended good people as well as their usual crowd of hucksters. From everything I can gather, Martin is one of the good ones.

I believe the Martin you refer to works for Reynolds Prop. which is on an IL short list of reputable real estate firms in Uruguay. I can vouch for the firm. I bought my house in Punta del Este about a year ago through Alan Smink, who runs their Punta business. Martin and Alan work together. I respect Alan’s professional integrity highly, and recommend the firm, and Martin, without reservation.

I am another Uruguayan born, a US citizen for the past 30 years.
Our only daughter was born in New York City, and got married 2 years ago here where we live now – Seattle.
We are the proud Grandparents of a beautiful baby girl named Stella Soleil.
We are planing a vacation trip in February to visit our family and enjoy the beach,- Pocitos, P. del Este, Cabo Polonio, and finally to see the family rice plantation in Rocha.
Our son in-law and daughter are very interested in moving to Uruguay, to experience living in a foreign country, and what better place than our country.
They need all kind of information before they moved down there ( in 2 years time) its not easy to move so far away.
My entire family and ourself can provide them with a lot of TIPS, but we are out of touch with the every day costumes of our Country.
We know that because of the famous Outsourcing, many American Companies are moving to Uruguay for many reasons.
Tax breaks, peaceful country, a highly educated population, good weather, and the most important for them; inexpensive labor rate.
It was great to find this pages.
I will keep looking at any news from Uruguay
Adios,
