The best lifestyle in the world for the price…
This is the journal of The Southron, an American Emigrant from Florida who has spent the last decade living in the West Indies, former Yugoslavia and Costa Rica. He moved to Montevideo, Uruguay at the end of February 2006...

Yesterday our usual Sunday get-together was moved from its former location to a very nice restaurant right on the Rio at Rambla Gandhi 400, called “El Viejo y El Mar — The Old Man and the Sea”; obviously it had been named for me….

While I had suspected that “something was up”, the change of venue was not a complete surprise as there has been an increasingly strong and growing dissatisfaction with the former location.

Certainly the view of the Rio, ease of access (all 1 floor with a ramp), attentive waiters and waitresses, open garden atmosphere and big “U” shaped table set up for our use was a huge improvement.

It was amazing to see the number of people gathered for this celebration—including one or two who rarely show their faces in public. I was also told about the efforts of those near and far to put together this celebration, and they are greatly appreciated. Then I was presented with a hand full of notes full of good wishes, and pages of emails filled with more felicitations.

I remain stunned at the success of something that simply started out as smart-alecky emails to friends—but I am also deeply gratified by its success and the feeling of having done something worthwhile.

Please be assured that I am even more committed than ever to this work and plan on hanging around or a long while! Now we have to build the local nonprofit Sociedad Southron AC, and also develop our newest web project: UruguayDailyNews.com.

Stay tuned for more news.

And once again, thank you kindly! ¡Muchísimas gracias!

Congratulations! I know we haven’t exactly been social butterflies but we’re still extremely grateful to all the help you’ve given us and for being one of the big reasons we came here in the first place!

Something to say?
