Noooooooo, I am not in the new house yet.
There isn’t a glitch in the contract (at least as far as I know), and the deal has not transmogrified from home sweet home into one of the gaping maws of hell. At our request, the contract will be signed tomorrow, as soon as our escribano approves it.
The main cause of the delay is simply a case of the 48 hour “Anteldata flu” The ADSL lines that are supposed to be installed today are tired, and have a fever, and the doctor says they can’t be moved until Wednesday. At least, that’s what I think they told me–it was either that or, “Gee, we’re sorry but we’re running two days late and we can’t meet the deadline we promised.” Either way, it means no Internet until Wednesday, so I get to stay in Carrasco for two nights more. I can live with it. On the bright side, there will be a lot more work done before I get into the house rather than after I move in.
On another front, my nephew confirms that he and his mother are bringing a handicapped scooter for me–they say it tops out at about 9 miles an hour, which is a bit more than 14 kph. It has a range of about 25 km per charge and will work on local electricity. This means on nice days instead of being the fat cripple in the wheelchair I can be the fat cripple whizzing by on his electric scooter. Watch out!
In other breaking news, the real estate deal previously reported in Treinta y Tres has fallen through, which is fabulously good providence for the gringo involved. The local escribano “overlooked” a few salient points including stale documents that had expired, and perhaps more significantly the utter lack of a record of “plans and permissions” for the building and other development of the property, which would have left the gringo buyer with a liability for thousands of dollars in costs and fines.
