I just don’t get out enough. Because of the wheelchair I have learned to work through surrogates to get most things done that are needful. Also, since living here in Carrasco requires an extra 20 or 30 minutes to get anywhere it fuels my disinclination to leave my desk. This is a mistake.Thursday I had to leave the house. For one thing, I thought it might be nice to actually look at my new digs before I occupied them. I also needed to visit Clara before she had been kidnapped and brought to her apartment at gunpoint, and I had a business meeting in Ciudad Vieja.
I had really forgotten just how marvelous the tree-lined boulevards in this city can be. Mile after mile, excuse me, kilometer after kilometer of all arboreal splendor unmatched by any place else in my travels. Even in apartment laden Pocitos, the ambience at street level was that of a country lane.
I definitely think I made the right decision giving up a bit of space for the central location of my new house in Pocitos. Once I get a handicap scooter, I will be able to range far and wide to the undoubted amusement along lookers. My plan is to make up for 10 months of isolation by as many months exploring every reasonably accessible nook and cranny. It should be quite a sight.

I find it endlessly fascinating just to wander around my neighborhood (Palermo). I know nothing about architecture, but it’s a real treat to be surrounded by buildings of such variety and intricacy. I also enjoy noticing the people, their activities, and the markets. (I have to keep reminding myself to look down, to watch out for the dog droppings and sidewalk upheavals.)

It’s nice to find others who appreciate Uruguay’s beautiful flora. I guess the closest I could find in the U.S. would be the Pacific Northwest region and Northern California (the mix of eucalyptus, palms, and pines isn’t all that frequent in the northern hemisphere).
Yes, the tree-lined streets of Montevideo often make you forget that there isn’t much of an ingrained poop-scoop culture there: pedestrians beware!
