Mount Everest part two.

Posted by The Southron on December 28th, 2006

Someone just pointed out to me that in my previous post about the party hosted by FuBarrio and Golden Lotus and I completely focused on the cuisine and ignored the people. Perhaps I did get just a tad focused on the food… The people at the party included a healthy mix of locals and ex-pats, [...]

Going to a party on Mount Everest…

Posted by The Southron on December 28th, 2006

Last night I went to a party on Mount Everest–maybe he just seemed like Mount Everest because it was such a climb.  It seemed as if the stairs went on forever.  My nephew, Nick, acted as my Sherpa, and carried my wheelchair ahead of me so that at every landing I could collapse into it, [...]

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…

There are so many things to like about Uruguay that the “unlikable” things really jump out. While I am finally safely ensconced in my new home/office in Buceo, the Copperhead is almost homeless.  Despite the valiant efforts of a really good realtor, recommended by Deb (and who will be on our recommended list when our [...]

Instant Christmas Music….

Posted by The Southron on December 25th, 2006

For those who may have forgotten to pack your Christmas music, just go to http://www.christmasradionetwork.com/ where they have Christmas 365 days every year. This was especially uplifting for me when i lived in Montenegro where Christmas came on January 7th and all the usual soucres of Christmas music were already well into something else. Have [...]

Happy Christmas to all!

Posted by The Southron on December 25th, 2006

Many of you have been kind enough to send the personal Christmas greetings through e-mail.  I simply don’t have enough time or energy to respond to each of those greetings in the way I would like.  But, be assured that they are appreciated and reciprocated. Christmas has always been very important to me; but as [...]

Montevideo just became more dangerous.

Posted by The Southron on December 24th, 2006

Thursday afternoon my sister-in-law and nephew arrived from Florida to spend Christmas week with me.  In addition to bringing themselves, which is the best part, they also very kindly brought my new handicapped scooter along with them.  Just to be safe come off I bought a special oversized heavy duty all-terrain supercharged scooter built on [...]

Taxis, taxis everywhere, but none that I can fit it…

Posted by The Southron on December 24th, 2006

Montevideo is literally crawling with taxis. Day or night you can see them cruising almost everywhere in the city. UL member Clara (our favorite Uruguaya-Californian) very neatly described how one can easily get a taxi in Montevideo.

10 kilometers closer and (temporarily) 1024kbps farther away…

I have made it and moved into my new house.  Unfortunately the ADSL lines have not! We planned everything to perfection!  We would first move only two ADSL lines into the new house and leave one at the old house as a contingency.  All the orders were placed early enough and installation was confirmed for [...]

Two steps forward one step back?

Posted by The Southron on December 18th, 2006

Noooooooo, I am not in the new house yet. There isn’t a glitch in the contract (at least as far as I know), and the deal has not transmogrified from home sweet home into one of the gaping maws of hell. At our request, the contract will be signed tomorrow, as soon as our escribano [...]

Thank you for your kindness!

I must admit that I was feeling incredibly frustrated when I wrote the “I have had it…” post here and in the forum.  Predictably, Bruce responded with a threat to kill and eat my dogs–at which I laughed, incidentally.  But frankly, the outpouring of positive comments turned my attitude around 180°.  The words in support [...]
