The best lifestyle in the world for the price…
This is the journal of The Southron, an American Emigrant from Florida who has spent the last decade living in the West Indies, former Yugoslavia and Costa Rica. He moved to Montevideo, Uruguay at the end of February 2006...

Fireworks in the sky…blackout on the ground.

Posted by southron on November 16th, 2006

I come from the lightning capital of the World, Pinellas Country Florida, where the statistical chances of getting struck by lightning are far better than they are for winning the lottery, or maybe even the perfecta at the local horse track. (Maybe this explains my magnetic personality?)
Despite that background, I was impressed last night at […]

Internet Limbo…how low can you go?

Posted by southron on November 14th, 2006

It is not often I manage to work two cheesy expressions into the title of one blog post, but today you are lucky. (Please note I didn’t say what kind of luck).
Imagine this situation:

you have moved to Uruguay, lock, stock and pets.
you have been living in a hotel with wireless broadband internet access (more […]

Of Maz and Men…and women and children too…

Posted by southron on November 13th, 2006

The Sunday afternoon gathering at Old Maz is beginning to take on some of the aspects of the old frontier trading post that served as store, restaurant, bar, post office, meeting place, etc.
Glen and his wife Marionella are the regulars that are always there, The Southron is just a bit irregular (some say about 15 […]

I’m so excited I could just…

Posted by southron on November 11th, 2006

I don’t think my readers understand the level of excitement I experience in my life, especially on the weekends, so I thought that perhaps I would give you a glimpse of a typical Southron weekend,
Saturday
08.40 wake up when my two organic alarm clocks (my dogs) decide to romp on top of me
08.45 go to desk […]

Montevideo is a capital Capital City!

Posted by southron on November 11th, 2006

Over the last 8 months we have spent so much time focusing on how livable Montevideo is that we have largely ignored one of the key elements that make it so: Montevideo is the Capital City of Uruguay.
That fact may sound obvious, and seem like an unimportant bit of almanac trivia, but it […]

Steaming, sticky, hot and humid…

Posted by southron on November 11th, 2006

…are NOT any of the terms that I would use to describe the weather here in Montevideo, despite what many of the Uruguayos will tell you. Right now it is 21C/70F and the relative humidity is 48%—compare that to 81% in St. Petersburg, Florida or 83% in Panamá, or even 73% in Miami—and I […]

Frankly, Scarlet, I don’t give a damn…

Posted by southron on November 11th, 2006

Rhett Butler’s famous demurrer seems to be the state of the Law here in Uruguay, at least insofar as it applies to fraud–at least on a one-to-one basis. No where has this been more clearly demonstrated than in the ongoing plight of the couple from the UK who had everything stolen minutes after moving […]

Computers are wonderful, it’s just the programs I hate…

Posted by southron on November 10th, 2006

I want you to know about one more–and hopefully the last–change in the UruguayLiving.com website.
We have grown so fast that we have just not been able to keep up technologically–largely because I am getting slow and stupid in my senescence. When we changed blog providers, many of the subscriptions got changed from subscriptions to […]

This is democracy?

Posted by southron on November 7th, 2006

Today’s US election will affect all of us in this blog/forum community: even those who are not US citizens are affected by the policies of the US government. For those of us who still carry the blue passport with the golden vulture on the front, that influence can be overwhelming, even if we […]

Really Rotten News

Posted by southron on November 4th, 2006

I just found out that the newest members of our community, a couple who only arrived from England today, have been burgled and they have had EVERYTHING stolen from their house while they were out buying initial supplies.
Apparently the  thieves broke in and carried off their luggage, laptops–everything but their cats.
They are understandably devastated.  The […]
