Dear Lord,
On this Thanksgiving Day, like the Pilgrims of old, I thank you for bringing me to this bountiful new land; for the new people brought into my life, both here and elsewhere. I know that without Your help, I have a hopeless tendency to get things wrong, so I pray for:
—the faith to start each day knowing that there is a purpose for my life and for each life you have made,
—the grace to find the highest and best purpose you intend for me,
—the strength to endure the obstacles in the road, whatever they may be,
—the wisdom not to isolate myself in a comfortable ghetto trying to recreate another place and time,
—the patience to graft myself into this people and their culture,
—the understanding necessary to discern those parts of my life to keep and those to leave behind,
—the humor to see the funny side of things that happen,
—the gift of tongues to daily speak more Spanish and less Spanglish;
Oh God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the change the things that I can change, and the wisdom to know that not nearly as many things need changing as I think…AMEN.

Amen, brother.
