I just found out that the newest members of our community, a couple who only arrived from England today, have been burgled and they have had EVERYTHING stolen from their house while they were out buying initial supplies.

Apparently the  thieves broke in and carried off their luggage, laptops–everything but their cats.

They are understandably devastated.  The police are there and the real estate agent is there and is being helpful.  We have despatched help from here as well.

I will see them as soon as I can organize transport–my wheelchair is on its way back from the repair shop.  I will keep you all in the loop.

I guess even the best places still have dirty rotten low life b******s–hopefully they will not get away with it.

More news as I get it.

Was there much news coverage on the event? Any rewards for info for capture on crooks? Sounds like an inside job. Some of the near neighbors or someone must have had info on the new people coming in.

    >>Don’t know about news coverage, but everything here is overwhelmed by the Ibero-American Summit hosted by the King of Spain for the heads of state of all of Latin America.

The police seem very serious about it though and even notified the UK embassy.  I remain hopeful of a decent outcome.

As the mother of the two people robbed on Saturday I just want to say how touched my husband and I by all the help given to our kids especially by David and friends without them I don’t know what Richard and Julie would have done. We are absolutely devastated by what has happened they were looking forward so much to their new life in Uruguay, happy to get away from all the problems in England. They well and truly burnt their boats behind them here, sold their house, car, furniture etc determined that they would make a go of it in Uruguay, if they come back it would be to nothing so their choices are limited. We are prepared to offer a reward for information if someone can tell us how we go about this, plus any publicity may help to find the people who did it. Thanks to everyone for their help

We are so sorry, that this happend.
Always it is terrible, when somebody steals your things, but the very first day!!
But it really seems, that somebody, were watching the house
    We feel really depressed.
If there is anything we can do, let us know

The police here is doing a good job, it is possible, they
    can catch the thief

So sad to hear something like this happened to these folks. I truly can’t imagine how horrible something like this would be.
When I visited back in October, I got the impression (I got the same impression from my previous trips to Montevideo) that theft is rather frequent and that no neighborhoods are spared (it happens in La Teja and it happens in Carrasco). A burglary attempt was made during our stay (my sister and I) in my mother’s house (close to avenida italia y propios) so she had the doors and windows reinforced by steel bars and contracted ADT for security services. I hope all newcomers take the necessary precautions to avoid sad episodes like the one suffered by this couple.
It is not rare to have crooks scout out neighborhoods and tell their cronies about which houses are good targets. It may even be obvious to some of these that some newcomers are actually new residents from another country (this makes them a specially tempting target since they often equate this with wealth).

Something to say?
