After 8 months the time has come to find a more permanent place for the Southron and company. This is NOT as easy as you may think. In addition to the usual parameters of price, safety, lack of vermin, water, electricity and phones, I have just a few added requirements:
- the floors must be reinforced so that they don’t cave in when I roll across them;
- there has to be at least a miniscule patch of grass, even an oversized planter, to function as a toilet for the dogs–they are picky about that sort of thing;
- there needs to be an accessible bathroom for a big fat guy in a wheelchair–I am picky about that sort of thing;
- the main rooms, including an office, bedroom and bathroom for me all need to be on one level or ramped;
- the doors to all of the main rooms need to be wide enough for a wheelchair to get through them–here in my temporary house I have to change chairs twice to go to the bathroom–boy, is that a lot of fun…;
- these rooms need to be on the ground floor in a house or a floor with a big terrace (to accomodate the dogs) in an apartment building;
- if it is an apartment building, it needs an oversized freight elevator, and ramp access to it–my favorite thing in the world is 2 or 3 steps before an elevator with no ramp on them–10 or 12 steps are even better;
- I need to be able to get a couple of additional phone lines;
- I need several ADSL lines or 1 big commerical ADSL connection as well;
- it needs to be somewhere with grocery and food delivery, especially McDonald’s, pizza, chinese and Armenian;
- I also need a guest room;
- and places for other people to work, as my digs always double as an office; and
- everything needs to be within walking distance of a nice partment for the Copperhead; and
- accessible by public transport, so staff can come to work.
Aside from that I have no requirements whatsoever.
I’ll let you know how it goes…

Are you looking to buy or rent? Are you opposed to unhinging doors to make such accomodations for wheelchair? I can look into something near us, but cannot guarantee anything. Out of curiosity, have you tried Jorge from Brindis Propriedades?
>>Not only will we unhinge doors, we will excavate, shave doorways, blast holes in foundations–I may have actually found something pretty cool. Would you please email me the contact information for Jorge to southron@uruguayliving.com? Thanks!
I can’t decide whether I want it to go quickly and easily and have it long and drawn out so I have a lot to write about…
