The best lifestyle in the world for the price…
This is the journal of The Southron, an American Emigrant from Florida who has spent the last decade living in the West Indies, former Yugoslavia and Costa Rica. He moved to Montevideo, Uruguay at the end of February 2006...

It may not be a tough as giving birth, but it sure was a lot of work. The file was created on 22 July 2006, at 11:25:02. The last modification was made this morning (I hope). In just a few days less than 100, The Southron’s Guide to Living in Uruguay has been written.

My plan is to self publish–we already have an ISBN number for the book and we are talking with a few big places about selling it. But before we can get to that, we need to do two things: set a price, and find a way to get paid. Paypal seems to be the answer to the second question, and I am hoping you can help me with the first.

To help you better make that judgment, you can download the first part of the book, the cover page through the entire first chapter from this post. This includes a very detailed table of contents for you to study.

Free Intro to The Southron’s Guide to Living in Uruguay

(From MS Internet Explorer right click on the above link and select Save Target As… and copy to your computer. You will need the Free Adobe Reader to open the file. You can get it at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)

Or go here:  http://www.uruguayliving.info/free.htm

My plan is to also offer the book at a reduced price to retirees on limited incomes. I also will provide free updates during the first year to all registered purchasers. AND the book will be set up to allow printing at 120dpi.

I hope you will help me price this fairly. The “Owner’s Manual” published elsewhere is being sold for US$69/on sale for US$51. If this edition of The Southon’s Guide is successful, I hope to write a far more complete 2nd edition next year.

Feel free to post a comment or email me privately.

Thanks!!!

    Southron;
Great read, I’ve been poking around the internet for english words written about Uruguay and I really appreciate the effort.
My goal is to retire from US life a little early and am searching for the right place. Hopefully after visiting Uruguay, it will be the one.
Thank you for the download and nice that you end the preview right at the offerings of sin. You do have a good style of writing, I enjoy your personal comments.
I’m not sure I would buy the full text at $50.00 unless my transition your direction was imminent, though I’m sure your efforts are worth that, it’s just in this day and age in the US. books aren’t that expensive unless it’s coffee table art.
I enjoy the site and apprecite your perspective.

    >>Thank you kindly for your input.  Based on the private feedback I have already gotten, I suspect we will set the price below US$50, and there will also be a discount for our blog and forums members, so we might yet be able to entice you even if the book doesn’t fit on your coffee table.

I just read the preview and it looks great. Even better than expected.

Looking forward to the full version- I think $40-$50 is certainly a reasonable price.

When looking for information on a place such as UY information is hard to come by. Contrast that with other “expat havens” where information is everywhere and carries an inflated price tag.

I like your style of writing and sense of humor. A good book on Uruguay is needed. When I was in Uruguay a18 months ago all I could find was a large, mostly photo book which cost $70.00. I think 40-50 dollars is appropiate.

Self publishing a paper book is archaic and undesirable for many reasons. Publish it as an e-book using Adobe Acrobat or something like it, and charge $20 using PayPal or something like it. If you Google “publish e-book” you will find a multitude of resources for helping you set this up in such a way that the buyers cannot copy your text/phots or forward the document to anyone else.

You will have no printing or shipping costs. The buyer pays immediately and securely online and receives the product immediately and securely online. They saved $30, the book is saved to their hard drive, and they can choose to print it out or not.

    Just my thoughts.

    >>Thanks for the good ideas!  I appreciate them.

I read the preview and loved it. I will second the suggestion that you consider e-publishing instead of or in addition to publishing a paper book. In my opinion, e-pub is better for everyone. The reader gets to download and read the book immediately (let’s hear it for instant gratification!) and it’s as near to pure profit as you can get for the author.

I just discovered this web site and I’m looking forward to learning more about living in Uruguay. Thanks.

    >>Thank you kindly for your comments.  It looks like we are going to self-publish the eBook to start with.  We already bhave the ISBN and are jumping through some other hoops that will hopefulkly be complñeted this week.

Something to say?
