I am just never happy with things the way they are–I always see at least 5 or 6 ways to make them better. That is sort of how this blog started. And, since it is part of my nature, I have added a few things. These include:
www.UruguayLiving.INFO, a sister site to this blog where our English services directory is being built. You can access it directly or from the bottom several items in the Important Links box on the right. Please let us know of anyone who ought to be listed in our yellow pages–or on our black list for that matter.
www.SociedadSouthron.net is also up and working, though with only one page containing some artwork and the Statement of Purposes and Programs. This will become a very lightly moderated bulletin board for members of Sociedad Southron to interact. As previously noted, SociedadSouthron.net
will be used as an (almost) open forum for Sociedad members to opine
about most anything limited only by a modicum of good taste, no bad
language beyond damn and hell, and no personal attacks.
SociedadSouthron email is working! The very first email account is Shirley@SociedadSouthron.net, who happened to be visiting our office when this was set up, so she got the honor of the first email account.
We are planning the very first Sociedad Southron get together on either the first or second weekend of December. I will host the first gathering and we'll see where we go from there.
Before the web design experts among you fall off of your chairs laughing, I KNOW the two new websites look terrible! But it was more important to get them up and working, than to have them perfect. (After 53 years I am still under construction–some days maybe deconstruction…)
One kind person has already offered to help, to I expect things will improve.
Let me know what you think of these additions–but be kind, I am old and frail and could easily be crushed by a harsh word…
…provided it was written on the treads of an Army Battle Tank…

We will be in Motevideo (Pocitos) the first two weeks of December. We will be leaving Saturday 12/16/2006. Hopefully the first get together will take place the weekend of Dec 9-10 so that we can meet everyone prior to our actual relocation in July 2007. This site has been terrific. I feel like I have met some of you already.

Hey Southron, I just wanted to tell you that I think is terrific what you are doing with these sites. I couln’t agree more with you, about how is better to have something up and working than waiting for the perfect thing to launch (there’s always room to improve).Sometimes when I receive verbal feedback about my site it comes along with very good feedback about this blog, so I just wanted to let you know that. keep up the good work, gabo

Southron, Actually, the sites are really quite good! The only quibble, and it is a minor one, is that you might rotate the lettering on the logo anticlockwise a few degrees. (22.5 or so). Otherwise looks real nice, links work, and is appreciated. This is a valuable service and I’m sure it will grow based on a similar system used in the States; Angie’s List. This is completely consumer driven due to that no provider is allowed to make input, only the consumer. Removes the bias and hype down to a fraction, if at all. Muchas gracias.

Thank you so much for spearheading this effort. I’m especially excited about your proposed Bulletin Board. Can’t wait to start the discussions about life in Uruguay. We’re just waiting for the right offer on our apartment ,and then we’ll be joining the adventure. Coming after extensive research, the process of elimination, and an urge to move southward.

Hi all,Not sure if this is appropriate but I am from Canada and wonder about shipping costs. I only have some boxes filled with cloths and junk. probaby 10-15lbs each box and about 30 boxes. 1ftx2ftx3ft in dimension. From your experiences, what is the cheapest way to ship something like this? Thanks!

There are three options of which I am aware.First, consider taking extra kggage, as much as the airline will allow, and pay extra for the luggae at a rate of US$50-100 per piece. While that seems expensive, it is much cheaper than UPS or FedEx or DHL.Second, checking on the price of sending them through the post via sea mail–or whatever they now call the slowest way to get here. It is ealso the chepest way, even though it may take a couple of months for the shipments to arrive.Third, call a few freight forwarders and ask them about prices for a “less than container load”.

I just came across your web page and it has had me smiling for the half past hour or so. As an Uruguayan expat living in DC (but very proud of her country) it was good to read your almost 100% positive comments about the country and for the ones that were not so positive, finding a funny way of presenting them.

Hi Southron. I just checked http://www.sociedadsouthron.net/ and noticed that your title says “S.A.” which is “Sociedad Anónima”. This means it’s a company in which you can own a share of it. That would not be compatible with a non profit society.Great website keep up this good work.

Daniel:I stand reproved and have made amends. The name has been corrected to Sociedad Southron Asociación Civil, which my accountant assures me is the proper name for a non profit organization. We will be actually filing the papers shortly.
