Less than 30 minutes ago I received an email from International Living which said in part,
Thank you for your recent purchase of Uruguay: The Owner’s
Manual.Unfortunately, this title is currently being
updated and re-printed and is expected to ship the week of the 29th of
September. Please rest assured that we are working to have your copy of
Uruguay: The Owner’s Manual to you as soon as possible.
To access the
updated version of Uruguay: The Owner’s Manual online,
please follow the link below…
Breathlessly I immediately clicked on the link to start the download. I turned away to get a drink and when I turned back, it appeared that nothing had happened. Annoyed, I clicked on the link again, and lo and behold, the download was, in fact complete.
As downloaded, it is 128 pages including front and back covers. The contents break down as follows:
Table of Contents - 8 pages
Welcome to Uruguay - 4 pages - this is signed by IL’s “Uruguay” contact, who lives in BA not here
Uruguay History - 6 pages, one of which is blank
Culture and Traditions - 6 pages, one of which is blank
Try to Use Spanish - 6 pages (really? I had my heart set on speaking Esperanto…)
Introduction to Uruguay’s Economy - 8 pages
The Best Places to Buy Real Estate - 38 pages
Step by Step Guide to Buying Property - 4 pages one of which is blank
Residency, Importing your Household Goods, Healthcare and More - 10 pages, one of which is blank
Are You going to Travel? What Else do you need to know - 8 pages
Appendices - 28 pages
IF the real estate information is good, the book may well be very useful. As you know I am not a real estate promoter and my book will certainly be weakest in that area. But, as previously noted, I encourage everyone to rent for a year before you buy and make sure Uruguay is for you.
I love it, but then I like liver too…
I had to buy IL’s book because of professional interest–I will let you know if there is anything worthwille in it in a day or two.

Only $59.. When you get a chance maybe you could compare the real estate section to Lee Harrison’s real estate section in general terms.

Hi Glad we are getting info rather than from IL whom seems to be more in the real estate selling or hyping it up.

I got this book several months ago and found it intersting. We will be going to Uruguay in Jan. So I really can’t tell you how good it is and if all of the info is useful. However it did have a lot of info)My partner was there in the 70’s and thought it good, but that was a long time ago. I also find this blog very helpfull. We are going to both Chile and Uruguay to see which we prefer-Rourk

Great website.Quick Question:Will you manage to review the book soon?
Left by Jimbo on September 28th, 2006
Having gone through the book and taken everything useful out of it in about 3 minutes I will not review it beyond noting that one of the chapters was listed in the Table of Contents as being entitled “Foreign Firms Doing Business in Honduras”.When my hardcopy arrives, I will gladly lend it to any of our blog regulars who would like to do a book review. In the meantime, you may want to keep your wallet in your pocket.

an oft repeated remark: great website with an abundance of information…
have a question for you regarding IL’s planned (or, at least scheduled) “seminar” in Montevideo, November 2007…
i had originally planned to attend… now, am re-thinking that decision…
my question is: do you believe there will be value for the money invested or am i better off to just spend time in Uruguay with your manual…
or, perhaps you have another idea
thanks, appreciate your response

>>Hello Joe:
I know there is going to be a lot of good information at the conference because our Law Firm will be doing a presentation that I know to be excellent. IL tends to focus on buying property and investments, which is something I have stayed away from–so if those things are of value to you, then that is a second reason to go.
I should also add that the realty company associated with IL has a good reputation in Punta del Este; at least based on all the reports I have had.
My last comment is this: I have heard that IL is changing its focus and reverting to its earlier policies and as such is going to return to its unbiased reporting. That would be a welcome change and would go a long way to restore IL’s once very positive image. This seminar will be a test of the truth of that statement.
If you do go, perhaps you will be kind enough to report on how it went–also I hope you find time to visit us here as well.
