Ñoquis: Featherbedding, food and fun

On the 29th day of every month, a huge proportion of Uruguayans eat Ñoquis. There is also a custom associated with the eating of ñoquis–Uruguayans put a coin under the plate before you eat them and this is supposed to bring you money in the next month. Some civil servants are called ñoquis too.

The Southron gets tripped up…

We have been working directly with the Immigration Department and the Foreign Ministry in order to get a visa for one of our key employees to move here from former Yugoslavia. Everyone in the government here has been wonderful, and the Honorary Consul of Uruguay in Hungary has been incredible. Everything was set for the visa approval to be issued this week and our employee to be here next week.

Then we were stopped dead in our tracks.

For those of us who need the occasional foray into the evening drinking establishments, Montevideo is both adequate and has multiple offerings. In terms of an 'expat' scene there is not a specific place in Montevideo that I know of as an “expat hangout”. Generally speaking, nightlife in Montevideo starts Thursday and finishes Sunday morning.

I have it on good authority that The Southron and at least one or two other members of this blog community will be there for sure this coming Sunday 1 October to Celebrate the Beginning of Uruguay Summer Time.
