The best lifestyle in the world for the price…
This is the journal of The Southron, an American Emigrant from Florida who has spent the last decade living in the West Indies, former Yugoslavia and Costa Rica. He moved to Montevideo, Uruguay at the end of February 2006...

My choice of Southron as a quasi pen name has come under considerable abuse.

Southron is NOT the combination of Southerner and Moron;
Southron is NOT a place;
Southron is NOT synonymous with Southerner;
Southron is NOT a word I made up.

Southron is the term the citizens of the Confederate States of America applied to themselves in contradistinction to Southerner. Someone from Kentucky was a Southerner, but not a Southron. The antonym of Southron is, of course, damnyankee (I was 14 before I found out it was 2 words–now I'm not sure it really is). There is a link to more details regarding the terms Southron on the sidebar.

I promised to report on the bank account opening–I was right–it is a mess and is not opened yet. When it finally gets open, I will write a detailed account of the agonies of opening a bank account: most of which are the direct result of The Patriot Act, even here. Thank you Mr. Bush!

I was also supposed to report back on going to Church–I know that word scares some of you–especially those who blister when touched with holy water: so just take a deep breath and skip down two paragraphs before you hyperventilate. I wouldn't want you to die unshriven.
I haven't been to church yet, even though there are two Orthodox churches here: Greek and Russian. Neither have a resident priest. The Greek Priest comes in from Brazil and the Russian Priest comes from Buenos Aires. As far as I know, I'm on the contact list for the next liturgy–whether I'll be singing Kyrie eleison or Hospodi pomiluj (the Greek and Russian respectively versions of “Lord have mercy.), I don't know yet.
OK, everybody back? I also promised to report on the alleged superstore Géant. Chris went there for the first time this week and likened it to a Wal-Mart. Prices on technology items were about 10% better than other big stores. The is a floor plan, with the items listed by category and location at http://www.geant.com.uy/principal/home/homes.asp?seccion=hipermercado I home you have your Spanish-English dictionary on hand.

Lastly I have been asked to update you on the weather. A link to Montevideo's Weather records is on the sidebar. Montevideo's weather is much less humid than the East Coast of the US, so I need to revise my previous comparison to the North Carolina Capes. After some research, we found the place in the US with the most similar weather: Long Beach, California. Long Beach is drier, but the temperature fluctuations are very similar–I was surprised. You can see for yourself at http://qwikcast.weatherbase.com/weather/weatherall.php3?s=079227&refer=

I hope you like the new format–if you do or don't, this allows you to comment, ask questions or even abuse me–within limits.

    thanks for the clarification on Southron … (so, in that case, what is the proper shorthand for “southern moron”????)

    Why “Jimmy Carter”, of course.

    No. I did not ask who is the “poster boy” of Southern morons.

    What I am looking for is a shorthand, an abbreviated use of language to save time when making a frequent reference.

    .

    In the South we usually call morons “damnyankees”, although sometimes the term “carpetbagger” slips out as well.

    This is, of course, in contradistinction to the more endearing term of “Copperhead”, which is the appellation of a Northerner sympathetic to the Southron cause.

Something to say?
